How to Convert Time to Decimal
To convert time to decimal hours, divide minutes by 60 and seconds by 3600, then add the results to the hours.
Decimal Hours = Hours + Minutes / 60 + Seconds / 3600
For example, 2 hours 45 minutes equals 2 + 45 / 60 = 2.75 decimal hours.
Common Examples
- 7 hours 30 minutes → 7 + 30/60 = 7.50 decimal hours
- 8 hours 15 minutes → 8 + 15/60 = 8.25 decimal hours
- 6 hours 45 minutes → 6 + 45/60 = 6.75 decimal hours
- 15 minutes → 0 + 15/60 = 0.25 decimal hours
- 3 hours 45 minutes 30 seconds → 3 + 45/60 + 30/3600 = 3.7583 decimal hours
Payroll and Billing Use Cases
Decimal hours are essential for payroll processing, client billing, and project time tracking. Here are common scenarios:
- Payroll: Convert an employee's 8h 30m workday to 8.50 decimal hours, then multiply by their hourly rate to calculate gross pay.
- Client Billing: A consultant works 2h 45m on a project. Converting to 2.75 decimal hours allows direct multiplication by the billing rate.
- Overtime: An employee works 9h 15m. The first 8 hours are regular (8.00), and the remaining 1.25 hours are calculated at the overtime rate.
- PTO Tracking: An employee takes 4h 15m of PTO, recorded as 4.25 decimal hours for accurate leave balance tracking.
